Smiljan Radić Clarke - Premio Pritzker 2026
El equipo de la Fundación de Arquitectura Frágil y los miembros de su directorio, Enrique Walker Rosemberg, Alberto Sato Kotani, Tomás Müller Benoit y Patricio Mardones Hiche, saludan a nuestro fundador y presidente, Smiljan Radić Clarke, quien fue reconocido hoy con el premio Pritzker 2026.
La decisión fue tomada por un jurado internacional coordinado por Manuela Lucá-Dazio –directora ejecutiva del premio– y constituido por los arquitectos Alejandro Aravena (Pritzker 2016), Deborah Berke, Anne Lacaton (Pritzker 2021), Hashim Sarkis y Kazuyo Sejima (Pritzker 2010); el abogado Stephen Breyer, y los curadores Barry Bergdoll y André Aranha Correia do Lago, quienes valoraron la contribución que Smiljan Radić ha hecho en el campo de la arquitectura, expresada a través de su obra construida, sus publicaciones y las iniciativas de difusión desarrolladas desde la Fundación.
El premio Pritzker fue creado en 1979 por los empresarios hoteleros Jay A. y Cindy Pritzker como una forma de “honrar en vida a profesionales de la arquitectura, cuya obra construida mostrara una combinación de talento, visión y compromiso, redundante en contribuciones consistentes y significativas a la humanidad y al entorno construido a través de la práctica de la arquitectura”.[1] Convencidos de la necesidad de cultivar una mayor conciencia pública sobre los edificios, el matrimonio Pritzker –originario de Chicago y comprometido con diversas actividades educativas, científicas, médicas y culturales– aspiraba promover la creatividad en la profesión arquitectónica por medio de este premio anual. Con el tiempo, el Pritzker se ha transformado en el principal galardón concedido a un arquitecto en el mundo.

El trabajo de Radić ha sido reconocido con numerosos premios internacionales, entre los que se incluyen el de Mejor Arquitecto Menor de 35 Años otorgado por el Colegio de Arquitectos de Chile (Chile, 2001), el Premio Architectural Record Design Vanguard (Estados Unidos, 2008), el Premio Oris (Croacia, 2015), el Premio Arnold W. Brunner Memorial de la Academia Americana de las Artes y las Letras (Estados Unidos, 2018) y el Gran Premio de la Bienal Panamericana de Arquitectura de Quito (Ecuador, 2022). Es miembro honorario del Instituto Americano de Arquitectos y miembro honorario de la Academia Croata de Ciencias y Artes, desde 2009 y 2020, respectivamente. En 2014 fue elegido para diseñar el Pabellón de la Serpentine Gallery en Londres.
En 2017 formó la Fundación de Arquitectura Frágil, dedicada a promover el estudio y difusión de la arquitectura experimental (o aquello que conocemos como realidad improbable) donde los bordes entre disciplinas se vuelven difusos. En la actualidad y hasta el 12 de abril, la Fundación expone “Tiras de Prueba. Arquitecturas 1951-1977” en el Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes que corresponde a una selección de dibujos, diagramas, collages y litografías pertenecientes a nuestra colección.
En este momento, Smiljan Radić se halla participando como presidente del jurado del “Premio de la Unión Europea para Arquitectura Contemporánea Mies van der Rohe”. Su regreso a Chile será comunicado oportunamente.

Smiljan Radić Clarke - Pritzker Prize 2026
The team at the Fundación de Arquitectura Frágil and the members of its board of directors, Enrique Walker Rosemberg, Alberto Sato Kotani, Tomás Müller Benoit and Patricio Mardones Hiche, congratulate our founder and president, Smiljan Radić Clarke, who was today awarded the 2026 Pritzker Prize.
The decision was made by an international jury coordinated by Manuela Lucá-Dazio, executive director of the prize, and composed of architects Alejandro Aravena (Pritzker 2016), Deborah Berke, Anne Lacaton (Pritzker 2021), Hashim Sarkis, and Kazuyo Sejima (Pritzker 2010); lawyer Stephen Breyer, and curators Barry Bergdoll and André Aranha Correia do Lago, who valued the contribution that Smiljan Radić has made to the field of architecture, expressed through his built work, his publications and the outreach initiatives developed by the Foundation.
The Pritzker Prize was created in 1979 by hotel entrepreneurs Jay A. and Cindy Pritzker as a way to ‘honour living professionals in architecture whose built work demonstrates a combination of talent, vision and commitment, resulting in consistent and significant contributions to humanity and the built environment through the practice of architecture’.[1].
Convinced of the need to cultivate greater public awareness of buildings, the Pritzkers—originally from Chicago and committed to various educational, scientific, medical, and cultural activities—sought to promote creativity in the architectural profession through this annual award. Over time, the Pritzker Prize has become the world's most prestigious award for an architect.

Radić's work has been recognised with numerous international awards, including Best Architect Under 35 from the Chilean College of Architects (Chile, 2001), the Architectural Record Design Vanguard Award (United States, 2008), the Oris Award (Croatia, 2015), the Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (United States, 2018) and the Grand Prize at the Pan-American Architecture Biennial in Quito (Ecuador, 2022). He has been an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects and an honorary member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts since 2009 and 2020, respectively. In 2014, he was chosen to design the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion in London.
In 2017, he established Fundación de Arquitectura Frágil, dedicated to promoting the study and dissemination of experimental architecture (or what we know as improbable reality), where the boundaries between disciplines are blurred. Currently, and until 12 April, the Foundation is exhibiting ‘Contact Sheets. Architectures 1951-1977’ at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Santiago, showcasing a selection of drawings, diagrams, collages and lithographs belonging to our collection.
Smiljan Radić is curently serving as president of the jury for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture Mies van der Rohe. His return to Chile will be announced in due course.
